Here is a lesson plan adapted from an idea first proposed
by Norie Aufdemberge of Shepherd
of the Hills Christian School, Centennial, CO. Norie uses a simple graphics
program called Kid Pix to drive this activity. Other graphics programs, such as
Microsoft Paint, would also work just fine. Here is Norie’s activity for her
second graders:
- Open
Kid Pix so that a blank page is showing. Using the typing tool, type the
words top, bottom, right, and left on the appropriate part of
the screen. These words will be guides as the student later give directions
to another student.
- Have
students create a picture of their choice. Remind each student to create
something that will be easy to describe with words.
- Print
the work of each student.
- Pair
up students in the class. The first student in the pair will receive their
picture. That student must then explain to his/her partner how to draw an
identical picture. Encourage students to only use words in their
descriptions. The student that is giving directions should never point to
the screen or communicate directions in a manner that is other than the
spoken word.
- When
the student finishes the copy, print the copy, and turn in both copies to
the teacher.
- Repeat
the process for the second student.
- When
you are finished you will have originals from each student and copies from
the partner of each student.
- Discuss
the problems the class faced in giving directions. What successes did the
students have as well? Spend some time analyzing the process, not just the
final result.

ArtsConnected: This
site, which is sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, allows
visitors to create their own online gallery of their favorite pieces, while
the Playground lets users create a variety of different types of artwork. Many
activities are here for all age, grade, and ability levels. A great site for
art education.
