PRE-ALGEBRA
FUNCTION TABLE LESSON
Use Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet for
the function rules x ®
2x +5 and x ®
3x + 5. Extend your spreadsheet to include values for x from 1 to
10.
- Use
a three column heading that includes the value of x and the two
function rules listed above.
- Find
the function results by writing spreadsheet formulas to create the results.
Remember that every formula begins with an = sign and that parentheses might
need to be used in order to properly signify the order of operations. Use
the cell names to formulate the correct answers.
EXAMPLE: =(2*a2)+5
- Copy
your spreadsheet grid to a word processing document by highlighting all the
cells, pressing the “Copy” button, and using the “Paste” button to
insert the grid into Word.
- In
the word processing document, describe in your own words the pattern of the
numbers in cells B2 through B11. Then describe the relationship among the
pattern of numbers in cells C2 through C11. Use complete sentences to
describe your results.
- Use
your results to predict what will be the pattern in a function table for the
function run x ®
4x +5. Create a function table in your spreadsheet to verify your
prediction. Was your prediction accurate? Why or why not? Explain using
complete sentences.
